Large flared-top Batwa basket

These Batwa baskets are unlike any other African basket. To the coiled grass construction a supplementary raffia woven design is added. The Batwa - the Twa people, a “pygmy” people - live in the border area of southwestern Uganda, northwestern Rwanda and eastern Congo, in the area of the Ruwenzori Mountains, in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. They live among a native gorilla population just like we live among whitetail deer.

8 1/4” tall x 11” top diameter.
